A project about a 65-year-old pirate who got marooned by his crew as he was no longer considered capable to cope with the dangers of the sea life. The pirate cannot bare to live on land, so he lives in an enclosure under the sea in a lonesome way away from the adventures of traveling. His longing for exploration and the unknown makes him trade worms he collects from the shore for stories from the fishermen of the harbor he lives in.

Piracy can have different meanings to different people. Disney pirates, internet pirates, terrorist pirates and so on...I see pirates as explorers of the unknown! Blackbeard is the most common character that comes to mind to most people, I think of Odysseus and Napoleon. Their sole purpose for traveling was DISCOVERY. Pirates used to be people who refused to follow the system, who would not accept unfairness or being ruled by an unjust king. Therefore, they fought the system and so they were stigmatized as evil people who only wanted to do harm, rob and kill the innocent. Where in fact, they were doing everything BUT that. They were those who helped the less fortunate, they explored and introduced new methods to different cultures, they were what internet is for us today. Information traveled through THEM! My pirate is only interested in gaining knowledge and living an interesting life full of stories to tell.

LOCATION

Folkestone is the principal town in the Shepway District of Kent, England. Its original site was in a valley in the sea cliffs and it developed through fishing and its closeness to the Continent as a landing place and treading port. The coming of the railways, the building of a ferry port, and its growing importance as a seaside resort all contributed to its growth. Currently Folkestone has the only sandy beach and coastal park within an hour of north London.
Folkestone, like most settlements on the south coast, became involved in smuggling during the eighteenth century. At the beginning of the 1800s a harbor was developed, but it was the coming of railways in 1843 that would have the bigger impact. With it came the tourist trade and the two industries contributed to its prosperity until changes in tourist opportunities in the mid twentieth century hollowed out its economy.
The major landmark in Folkestone, apart from the Harbor , is the Leas, the cliffs above the beach. A Martello Tower stands on the cliff above Copt Point. Build in 1806 as a defense against Napoleon, it has also been a Coast Guard lookout, a family home, a golf clubhouse and a World War Naval mine control post. It now houses a visitor center. Folkestone has suffered a decline in industry since the end of the W.W.II, as with most British holiday resorts.

The brief for this project asked for the build enclosure to have an inflatable part. When I visited Folkestone, looking at the harbor and the way the tide was so low, water disappeared living the boats on dry land, I immediately thought of a pirate stuck in a harbor as his boat is left on dry land. After some research I decided to create an enclosure that would trap the pirate in the water once the tide is up and free him once the tide is low. Using a buoy that would hold up a tent like structure for the living part of the pirate and come down once the tide is low. Experimenting with balloons and fabric and looking at how underwater air-lift bags that carry heavy loads work, I created a submarine+tent like enclosure for my pirate.

We were asked to present 3d exploded images and a video of our enclosure. This was one of my first attempts at 3d video creation working from scratch.
