CAPTURING PECKHAM is a project created to enhance the way people experience Peckham and offer them instruments to explore the area.

I wanted my building to have a relationship with the historic Peckham Rye station, therefore I used materials that remind the Victorian design of the station. I decided to use Portland stone (limestone) for the exterior cladding, and have some iron detailing in the interiors of the building, like for example the staircase. To keep the touch of the contemporary Peckham I decided to create a green copper seamed roof and clad the interior with wood, while the structure is concrete. The kind of mixing of materials reminded me the multicultural side of Peckham. Furthermore, I positioned the main entrance to the building in front of the Station’s exit and the second entrance on the side of Rye Lane, creating a big open space to allow flow of people. Moreover, the front and back (Station and Rye Lane sides) are glazed, allowing a partial view of the station.

The uses of my buildings begin from the ground floor where at the ticket office you can purchase tickets for films playing in the auditorium. Then at the ticket office interior side, you can sit and draw a map, a map of a place you know really well and in exchange you get a map of Peckham drawn by a local! Locals on the other hand get to draw the map of Peckham noting whatever they think is interesting and in exchange get a black and white film which they can also develop on the floors above.
